Romania faces potential gas price shock in 2027

Romanian Senator Cătălin Silegeanu has warned of a potential gas price shock in the spring of 2027, coinciding with the expiration of price capping schemes for domestic consumers. Citing European Commission Communication COM(2026) 370, Silegeanu noted that gas prices could reach approximately 100 euro/MWh, leaving Romania among the most exposed nations once protections expire on March 31, 2027.

The Senator emphasized the urgent need for Romania to invest in energy infrastructure, including large-capacity batteries, transformation stations, evacuation lines, smart meters, and distribution network automation. He highlighted a significant funding gap, noting that while annual investment needs are estimated at approximately 660 billion euro through 2030, the Connecting Europe Facility – Energy provides only 5.84 billion euro for the 2021–2027 period.

Silegeanu called for non-reimbursable European funding and increased cross-border cooperation to support storage, interconnections, and the evacuation of production from the Dobrogea region. He criticized the current approach, stating that while the EU mandates decarbonization and investment obligations, the necessary financial support and international cooperation remain insufficient.
