Romania faces rising human-bear conflicts due to management gaps

Experts and researchers in Romania are highlighting the growing challenge of human-bear conflicts, noting that the traditional distinction between forest habitats and human settlements is blurring. Research indicates that brown bears are increasingly moving from mountainous regions into hilly and urban areas, particularly during the summer and autumn, in search of easy food sources such as agricultural crops and household waste.

Effective management of the bear population is currently hindered by several systemic issues. Experts suggest that current approaches are reactive rather than preventive. Key recommendations for improvement include the establishment of official sanctuaries for problematic bears—a project that has faced delays due to administrative and feasibility issues—and stricter waste management regulations. The lack of bear-proof containers in municipalities and tourist areas often leads to bears becoming habituated to human food, which exacerbates the risk of dangerous encounters.
