Romania faces scandal over alleged U.S. interference in government collapse

A political scandal, dubbed ‘Kimberligate’ by Romanian media, has emerged following reports from The Wall Street Journal regarding Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. Ambassador to Athens. The reports allege that Guilfoyle claimed during a dinner in Greece to have been involved in the collapse of Ilie Bolojan’s government, stating that the United States has the capability to topple governments in any country.

The controversy is linked to secret meetings held in Bucharest in March 2026 involving Social Democratic Party leader Sorin Grindeanu and former Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan. These meetings occurred shortly before the Social Democrats left the governing coalition. Investigations suggest Guilfoyle was lobbying for expensive American liquefied natural gas via the Vertical Gas Corridor, with allegations that Bogdan Ivan pressured state companies into unfavorable purchases.

Following the coalition's departure, the Social Democrats filed a joint vote of no confidence with the far-right AUR party. While Sorin Grindeanu maintains the discussions were strictly about strategic energy routes and George Simion has denied foreign interference, opposition leaders Siegfried Mureșan and Dominic Fritz are demanding a formal inquiry into potential external interference and unregulated commissions.
