Romania faces scrutiny over disability certificate abuses and algorithmic management laws

Ilie Bolojan has raised concerns regarding the potential abuse of disability certificates in Romania, noting that approximately one million people in the country hold such documents. He highlighted a specific case at a customs point in Mehedinți where nine out of eleven employees possessed disability certificates. Following a request for an inspection by the Ministry of Labor, Bolojan claimed that four or five of the employees reportedly recovered from their conditions during the audit process.

Separately, the European Commission is advancing the Quality Jobs Act, a legislative initiative aimed at regulating algorithmic management and the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace. The proposal, expected to be finalized by the end of the year, seeks to address challenges where automated systems make decisions regarding bonuses, shifts, or recruitment. The act aims to provide clearer frameworks for employees to contest decisions made by software and to increase transparency regarding the criteria used by automated management tools.
