Romania faces security risks due to low defense spending

A report from the Warsaw Security Forum indicates that Romania ranks low in defense spending compared to its regional neighbors, such as Poland and the Baltic states. This discrepancy risks leaving the country in a security “gray zone” within the Black Sea region.

Antonia Pup, a researcher at the European University Institute in Florence, warns that Romania is perceived as less strategically responsible by its allies. She notes that while official political discourse in Bucharest emphasizes significant GDP allocations for defense, these efforts are not being effectively communicated or amplified in international analytical circles. To prevent marginalization, Pup suggests the rapid operationalization of a Black Sea Maritime Security Hub and a stronger presidential presence at major international summits.
