Romania faces shortages of critical cardiovascular and oncology medications

Patients in Romania, specifically in the Prahova region, are facing significant difficulties accessing essential medications for chronic conditions. The College of Pharmacists Prahova has confirmed supply discontinuities affecting various critical treatments.

Key substances facing shortages include metoprolol, carvedilol, and captopril for cardiovascular health, as well as pregabalin, atomoxetine, and valproic acid for neurological and psychiatric care. Additionally, shortages have been reported for oncology medications such as imatinib, as well as treatments for diabetes and Parkinson's disease.

According to Silviu Constantinescu, president of the College of Pharmacists Prahova, the shortage is a general issue across the country. While many of these disruptions are described as temporary, the resumption of supply for certain products may not occur until between September and December 2026.
