Romania faces significant economic impact from food waste

The Federation of Food Banks in Romania (FBAR) reports that Romanian households discard approximately 1.87 million tons of food annually. This waste represents a significant financial burden for both individual families and the macroeconomy.

According to Eurostat data, over 53% of food waste in Europe occurs at the household level. FBAR notes that common causes include inefficient shopping habits, improper food storage, and confusion regarding the difference between safety expiration dates and optimal quality dates. For an average family, these habits can result in losses of several thousand lei per year.
