Romania feels magnitude 3.4 earthquake in Vrancea
On 28 July 2026 at 17:01:11 local time, the National Institute for Earth Physics (INFP) recorded a shallow‑moderate earthquake of magnitude 3.4 in the Vrancea seismic zone of Buzău County, Romania. The hypocentre was at a depth of 119.6 km. The epicentre lay about 49 km south of Buzău, 49 km south of Focșani, 71 km southeast of Sfântu Gheorghe, 77 km east of Brașov and 80 km northeast of Ploiești.
No significant damage or injuries were reported. The event follows a period of heightened seismic activity: since the start of July 2026, Romania has experienced 23 quakes with magnitudes between 2.0 and 3.4, and the strongest quake of the year so far was a magnitude 4.5 tremor on 26 February in Vrancea. Specialists continue to monitor the Vrancea zone, the country's most active seismic area, for any future developments.
