Romania focuses on wood heating modernization and social assistance

In Romania, where approximately 3.5 million households rely on wood for heating, discussions regarding heating systems have focused on modernization rather than prohibition. Current initiatives aim to support the voluntary replacement of at least 250,000 inefficient, old heating systems with modern equipment. These modern stoves are designed to control air intake and maintain higher combustion temperatures, allowing gases to burn more completely and reducing smoke emissions while increasing heat transfer.

The cost of modern heating equipment varies significantly, with economical models ranging from 900 to 1,500 lei, while high-end or automated pellet models can exceed 15,000 lei. Additionally, firewood prices fluctuate between 160 and 430 lei per cubic meter depending on the region and wood type.

On a local level, the Galați Local Council has approved a program to distribute free firewood to vulnerable citizens for the 2026-2027 winter period. Approximately 252 families or single individuals may receive 6 cubic meters of wood each, sourced from public domain cuttings and waste. Priority for this assistance is given to single pensioners, families with serious health issues, and those whose monthly net income per member is below the national minimum wage.
