Romania gold prices fluctuate as historical treasury remains in Russia
The National Bank of Romania (BNR) set the price for one gram of gold at 671.7469 lei for Tuesday, August 25, 2026, representing a slight decrease of 0.4993 lei from the previous day. Despite this minor dip, the price remains approximately 1.52% higher than it was on Friday, August 21.
Separately, attention has returned to the Romanian national treasury, consisting of 93.4 tons of fine gold currently held in Russia. Sent to Moscow for safekeeping during World War I in 1916 and 1917, these assets are estimated to be worth over 11 billion euros. While Russia has returned some items, such as the Cloșca și Puii de Aur piece and certain artworks, the bulk of the gold remains unreturned. Russia has previously suggested that Romania's wartime debts to them exceed the value of the gold.
