Romania's energy crisis forces Dacia and Ford plants to halt production

A severe drought has lowered the Danube River to historic lows, limiting cooling water for the Cernavodă nuclear power plant. One reactor unit has been shut down and the remaining unit operates at reduced capacity, prompting the government to allocate funds for emergency water‑management works.

Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced that the car manufacturers Dacia and Ford will voluntarily suspend production in Romania until 19 August, a move expected to save roughly 200 MW of electricity. The government also called for voluntary consumption cuts by large users between 19:00 and 23:00.

Large retail chains (AMRCR members) are limiting air‑conditioning and turning off night‑time advertising lighting, while several municipalities, including Brașov and Vintilă Vodă, have reduced or suspended public‑lighting to further ease the grid load.
