Romanian healthcare faces critical funding crisis and fuel shortages
Former Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete has warned of a critical funding crisis within the Romanian healthcare system. He cautioned that emergency services, including ambulances, risk running out of fuel by October 1 due to exhausted budgets.
Rogobete stated that the financial imbalance is particularly severe for critical care units, including intensive care (ATI), emergency departments, and specialized programs for stroke, acute myocardial infarction, and severe burns. He noted that the healthcare budget is highly volatile because patient numbers and emergency incidents cannot be accurately predicted at the start of the year.
Several economic factors have contributed to the rapid depletion of funds, including rising energy costs, increased fuel prices, and higher VAT. Rogobete emphasized that the current interim government is unable to implement the necessary budget rectifications to address these gaps. He suggested that the government should urgently supplement the healthcare budget using reserve funds.
In addition to systemic funding issues, Rogobete highlighted local challenges, such as staffing shortages and rising operational costs at facilities like the Brad Municipal Hospital. He argued against closing smaller hospitals, advocating instead for modernization and investment in diagnostic equipment and laboratories to ensure local access to care.
