Series of Minor Quakes Shakes Romania's Vrancea Region

A cluster of shallow earthquakes struck Romania’s Vrancea seismic zone between 24 July and 26 July 2026. On 24 July a magnitude 3.3 tremor was recorded at 05:19 UTC near Buzău at a depth of about 109 km. The following night, 25 July, saw three more quakes: a 3.2 magnitude at 23:20 UTC (depth 89 km), a 3.5 magnitude at 02:35 UTC (depth 148 km), and a weaker 2.4 magnitude at 04:52 UTC (depth 19 km). Another modest event of magnitude 3.1 was reported on the afternoon of 25 July.

All epicentres were located in the Vrancea‑Buzău area, close to cities such as Brașov, Sfântu Gheorghe, Ploiești, Focșani and Buzău. The Romanian Institute for Research‑Development in Earth Physics (INCDFP) confirmed the quakes are typical for the region, which is the most seismically active part of the country and one of Europe’s major tectonic zones. No material damage or injuries were reported, and the events are being continuously monitored.

The recent activity follows a pattern of frequent low‑to‑moderate magnitude tremors in Vrancea, with the strongest quake of the year, a magnitude 4.5, having occurred on 26 February 2026.
