Hidroelectrica to increase electricity prices in October 2026

Hidroelectrica has announced an adjustment to its electricity prices effective October 2026. The price for active energy will rise from 0.45 lei/kWh to 0.515 lei/kWh, representing an increase of approximately 13%. This change specifically targets new customers and those whose existing contracts are reaching their expiration dates.

While the active energy price is rising by 13%, the impact on the final consumer bill is estimated to be approximately 7% due to fixed distribution fees, taxes, and other regulated components. The company, which serves over 1.2 million clients, cited several factors for the adjustment, including rising operational costs, fuel price fluctuations, and unfavorable hydrological conditions.

Specifically, low water levels in the Danube have significantly impacted hydroelectric production. In July and August, river flows reached only 39.7% and 36.1% of multi-annual averages, respectively. This scarcity is particularly critical for the Iron Gates facilities, which account for roughly 40% of Hidroelectrica’s total energy production. Additionally, the cost of water used for production has increased by 7.32% since June 2026.
