Romania: Public awareness of EU farm support rises amid political dissatisfaction

Recent surveys and legislative updates highlight several key trends in Romania. According to Eurobarometer data, 78% of Romanians are aware of the European Union's support for farmers through the Common Agricultural Policy, matching the EU average. While 62% of Romanians view current financial support levels for farmers as adequate, 74% believe climate change mitigation should be a major priority for the policy, which is lower than the EU average of 86%.

In terms of political sentiment, a CURS poll indicates that 79% of Romanians believe the country is heading in the wrong direction. Regarding parliamentary election intentions, AUR leads with 34%, followed by PSD at 25% and PNL at 18%. Public opinion is evenly split on the possibility of early parliamentary elections, with 47% in favor and 47% against.

Economically, the Romanian Parliament has adopted amendments to state aid schemes for pig and cattle farmers for 2026 to simplify access to support. Meanwhile, BNR Vice Governor Cosmin Marinescu expressed a reserved economic outlook, noting that the economy faces challenges from international uncertainties and domestic political situations, with growth rates projected at 0.9% for 2024 and 0.7% for 2025.
