Romania-Hungary border security shifts to joint patrols after Schengen accession

Following Romania’s full accession to the Schengen Area on January 1, 2025, law enforcement strategies at the Romanian-Hungarian border have shifted from fixed checkpoints to compensatory measures. While permanent border controls and queues have been eliminated for travelers, police activity has moved deeper into the territory and onto major transit routes.

Under a bilateral agreement modeled after the Hungarian-Austrian border cooperation, Hungarian police officers participate in joint patrols within Romanian territory, specifically up to ten kilometers from the border. These operations focus on monitoring individuals legally residing in Romania and managing transit traffic moving from Romania toward Western Europe.

The Hungarian National Police Headquarters (ORFK) reports that illegal migration pressure has not significantly increased since the Schengen accession. Instead, enforcement has transitioned to weight-based inspections on the Hungarian highway network to intercept transit traffic. Data from the first eight months of 2026 shows extensive activity, with joint patrols checking tens of thousands of individuals and vehicles across both sides of the border.
