Romania increases death benefits for pensioners in 2026

Starting March 30, 2026, the death benefit for pensioners or insured individuals in Romania will increase to 9,192 lei, up from 8,620 lei. This adjustment is established under Law no. 44/2026 regarding the state social insurance budget.

The full amount is granted to a single person who can prove they covered the funeral expenses. This recipient can be a relative, a non-relative, or even a company. For the death of an uninsured family member, the benefit is set at 4,596 lei, provided specific legal conditions are met regarding the relationship to an insured or pensioned person.

The amount is determined by the date of death rather than the date the application is submitted. To qualify for the full benefit, the deceased must have been insured within the six months prior to death, regardless of the total number of years contributed.
