Romania has officially introduced the RO Wallet project, a digital identity wallet designed to allow citizens to store and present official documents, such as identity cards, driver's licenses, and diplomas, directly from their smartphones. Developed in alignment with the European Union’s eIDAS 2.0 regulation, the application is intended to be interoperable with other EU member states' digital wallets.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has released the project's technical documentation on GitHub to ensure transparency. A key feature of the system is user data control; citizens can choose to share only specific, verified information. For example, a user could prove they are over 18 without revealing their exact date of birth or full address.

The rollout will follow a multi-stage timeline: a test version is scheduled for late October 2026, followed by a limited beta phase in December 2026. The official launch of RO Wallet v1 is targeted for January 14, 2027. The service will be free and optional, and it will not replace physical documents.
