Romania joins EU road‑safety campaign amid cyclist safety concerns

Romania has become a partner in the European road‑safety campaign “Safety Starts with Responsibility”, coordinated by Insurance Europe with associations from Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia, Bulgaria and France. The initiative targets the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving and the safe use of electric scooters. Alexandru Ciuncan, president of the Road Safety Coalition, said the campaign aims to raise public awareness and promote responsible behaviour to save lives.

At the same time, Romanian cyclists report frequent hazards from aggressive drivers, insufficient infrastructure and the risk of fines when riding on sidewalks. Radu Mititean, president of the Romanian Cyclists Federation, noted that many people own bicycles but avoid using them because of unsafe traffic conditions. He called for better, wider bike lanes and suggested a legislative amendment to allow limited sidewalk riding under strict conditions. Both the campaign and the cyclists’ remarks highlight the need for improved road safety measures and more responsible behaviour among all road users.
