Romania economic outlook: 2027 tax, pension, and wage projections
Romanian government officials have provided several updates regarding the country's fiscal and social landscape heading into 2027. Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare stated that while he does not desire new taxes or property taxes based on market value, the government must ensure budget sustainability to maintain international credit ratings. He warned that any unbudgeted spending programs would require identified funding sources to avoid fiscal imbalances.
Regarding social benefits, Labor Minister Florin Manole announced that the gross minimum wage is expected to remain at 4,325 lei on January 1, 2027, pending future negotiations based on macroeconomic indicators and productivity. Additionally, the government is planning a pension indexation for 2027, which could see increases of approximately 7.7% to 11.3% depending on inflation and available resources. Minister Manole emphasized that this indexation must be handled prudently to avoid economic instability.
Political leaders also weighed in on the fiscal situation. PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu assured that taxes for citizens and companies would not increase in 2027, emphasizing the need for economic predictability. Conversely, PNL Deputy Ionel Bogdan defended the current budget execution, noting that the budget deficit had decreased from 5.31% to 3.81% of GDP during the first nine months of the year, while public investments and revenues have increased.
