Romania faces economic and demographic challenges in labor and retirement

Recent economic and demographic data highlight significant challenges in Romania regarding labor markets and life expectancy. According to 2024 analyses from Eurostat and the OECD, Romanians face one of the shortest estimated periods of life after reaching retirement age in the European Union. Men are expected to live approximately 15.1 years after retirement, while women are expected to live 19.1 years, both figures falling below the EU averages of 18.4 and 21.8 years, respectively.

In the labor market, nominal wages in Romania saw a 4.8% increase in 2025, but a 9.7% inflation rate resulted in a 4.5% decrease in real wages. This decline in purchasing power is further evidenced by regional disparities; for instance, in Botoșani, the average gross salary remains significantly lower than the national average. Additionally, the gap between candidate salary expectations and employer offers has widened to nearly 30%.

Labor costs in Romania also showed a marked slowdown, with hourly costs increasing by only 1.8% in the second quarter of 2026, compared to a 3.2% increase across the EU. These trends reflect a complex economic landscape characterized by high inflation, regional inequality, and demographic shifts in former industrial areas.
