Romania energy transition: solar initiatives and funding

Romania is seeing a surge in legislative and financial initiatives aimed at accelerating the energy transition. The Environmental Fund Administration (AFM) has launched a 400 million lei program to provide up to 15,000 lei in non-reimbursable funding for homeowners with existing photovoltaic systems to install energy storage batteries.

In Parliament, new legislative proposals supported by the Prosumer Association aim to allow apartment dwellers to install small-scale solar kits on balconies or larger systems on building rooftops. These projects seek to reduce electricity bills for millions of citizens by enabling local production and storage.

On a larger scale, Romania has announced plans for the construction of the largest photovoltaic park in the European Union, located in Timiș County, with an estimated capacity of 1,000 MW. Meanwhile, the Minister of Energy, Dumitru Chisăliță, stated that the liberalization of the natural gas market will be a gradual process to ensure stability and avoid negative impacts on market participants.
