Romania local authorities face severe budget crisis
Local authorities in Romania are facing a severe financial crisis due to the absence of a budget rectification following the fall of the Bolojan government. Officials warn that many administrative units (UATs) and decentralized institutions may run out of operating funds by the end of October.
In Giurgiu County, the situation is particularly acute, with at least ten municipalities having completely exhausted their operating budgets for the year. Local leaders report that low tax and fee collection rates make it impossible to cover essential costs without additional state support.
Without immediate intervention, many rural communities risk being unable to pay employee salaries, maintain public lighting, or purchase basic utilities. Local mayors are calling for urgent financial support and a budget rectification through Parliament to prevent a total administrative collapse.
