Romania maintains health insurance card validity amid electronic ID rollout

The National Health Insurance House has clarified that the existing national health insurance card remains valid and functional despite the introduction of the electronic identity card (CEI). Patients will continue to have access to medical consultations, tests, and subsidized medications using their current health cards.

While regulations allow medical providers to request the electronic identity card starting September 1, 2026, the use of the CEI is not mandatory. A transition period has been established from September 1, 2026, to December 31, 2027, during which both the health insurance card and the electronic identity card can function in parallel. This period is intended to allow medical providers to adapt their IT systems and card readers to ensure compatibility.

Additionally, the launch of the eSănătateaMea platform is expanding digital services within the insurance system. The portal allows patients to schedule appointments online with enrolled medical providers. Enrollment for providers is currently voluntary, but increasing participation will expand the options available to patients through the digital portal.
