Romania implements fire prevention and flood mitigation measures

Romania is implementing various measures to mitigate environmental risks, including forest fire management and flood prevention. In Domogled – Valea Cernei National Park, firefighters are battling a forest fire affecting over 400 hectares. The difficult terrain and presence of dead wood in strict protection zones have complicated containment efforts, though authorities state that nearby settlements like Băile Herculane are not in danger.

In response to recent fires, Interim Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu has announced a new legislative project to update forest fire prevention and defense norms for the first time in 26 years. The proposed changes focus on improved monitoring via drones, thermal cameras, and satellite imagery, as well as better management of combustible materials like dry vegetation and dead wood.

Simultaneously, local authorities are conducting maintenance on riverbeds to reduce flood risks. In Recea Commune, teams are clearing stream beds and removing hazardous trees in Săvăstreni and Recea. In the Dragoia area, the Jiu Water Basin Administration (ABA Jiu) is working to desilt and reprofile the Desnățui stream to ensure better water flow and protect nearby households from potential flash floods.
