Romania observes National Anthem Day on July 29

Romania commemorates National Anthem Day each year on 29 July. The date marks the first official performance of "Deșteaptă‑te, române!" on 29 July 1848 in Parcul Zăvoi, Râmnicu Vâlcea. The lyrics were written by poet Andrei Mureșanu and the melody is traditionally attributed to Anton Pann. In 1998 the Romanian Parliament instituted the holiday with Law No. 99/1998, which requires public authorities to organise cultural‑educational programmes and military‑religious ceremonies throughout the country. The law also authorises the National Bank of Romania to issue commemorative gold coins (500 lei and 1 000 lei) on the day. Across Romania, municipalities such as Botoșani, Brașov, Târgu Jiu and many others hold solemn events that include flag‑raising, the singing of the anthem, prayers and military honour guards, attended by local officials, military units and community members.
