Romania celebrates Saint Dumitru traditions and name days

On October 25 and 26, various regions in Romania observe the traditions associated with Saint Dumitru. In Argeș County, including Mioveni and the Bratia and Argeș valleys, communities gather around large bonfires known as ‘Focul lui Sumedru’. This ancient ritual symbolizes the transition from autumn to winter and includes customs such as jumping over fires for health and scattering embers in orchards to ensure a bountiful harvest.

On the religious holiday of Saint Dumitru, hundreds of thousands of Romanians celebrate their name days. According to data from the General Directorate for Persons Evidence (DGEP), over 200,000 men bear the name Dumitru, though the number of people with this specific name has shown a steady decline. Conversely, related names such as Dimitrie and Dima have seen recent increases in popularity.

In the commune of Țițești, local authorities honored 20 couples celebrating 50 years of marriage, highlighting community resilience and intergenerational respect.
