Romania observes Day of Commemoration of Victims of Fascism and Communism

August 23 is designated in Romania as the Day of Commemoration of the Victims of Fascism and Communism, established under Law no. 198/2011. The legislation was initiated by the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER) to ensure a coherent national memory policy and to educate younger generations about the victims of totalitarian regimes.

Historically, the date was marked in cities like Râmnicu Vâlcea by large-scale communist parades involving workers, students, and military units. These events often featured propaganda, portraits of leadership, and organized displays of socialist loyalty.
