Romania offers 90% rail discount for students on specific routes

Students in Romania, including both domestic and international students and doctoral candidates, are eligible for a 90% discount on second-class domestic rail travel. This reduction applies specifically to the route between a student's place of residence and the location of their faculty.

To utilize the discount, students must present a valid student ID for the current academic year and an identity document. For first-year students awaiting their transport IDs, original student certificates for the 2026-2027 academic year can be used to purchase discounted tickets or subscriptions until November 30, 2026. From December 1, 2026, the discount will require the new academic year's student ID.

The discount is applicable to Regio, InterRegio, and InterCity trains in second class. Travel in first class, sleeper cars, or couchette cars requires full payment. Albert Conachi, President of the National Alliance of Student Organizations in Romania, has advocated for extending this facility to all routes, noting that the cost to the state for such an expansion would be minimal.
