Romania implements various social welfare and school funding measures
The Romanian government has approved several social and economic measures for the 2026-2027 period. A significant budget of over 802 million lei has been allocated to the School Program, providing free milk, fruit, and bakery products to approximately 1.86 million students. This program is supported by both national funds and European Union assistance.
Regarding educational support, families with low incomes can apply for free school supplies. Eligibility is based on a monthly net income per family member not exceeding 50% of the national gross minimum wage. Additionally, legal experts have clarified that parents cannot be legally forced to contribute to informal “class funds” in state schools, as these lack legal standing.
In terms of social welfare, disability benefits for September 2026 have been outlined, with payments varying by severity of disability. For adults with severe disabilities, the monthly amount is 728 lei, while those with moderate disabilities receive 80 lei.
In the agricultural sector, a new legislative proposal in the Senate aims to provide 15 euro per bee family as a de minimis aid, provided beekeepers can prove the commercialization of at least 6 kg of honey per family annually.
Meanwhile, Metrorex faces potential financial instability as the government reviews its 2026 budget, following the Ministry of Transport's refusal to allocate certain subsidies due to legal non-compliance.
