Romania: AUR flag-kissing bill sparks political backlash
Romanian political tensions have escalated following a controversial legislative proposal by the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR). The bill would mandate that officials attending National Flag Day ceremonies kiss the Romanian tricolor. Failure to comply could result in fines ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 lei, while avoiding the ceremony could lead to criminal investigations for abuse of office.
Interim Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu of the National Liberal Party (PNL) has sharply criticized the measure, calling the idea that patriotism can be coerced through law “as absurd as it is foolish.” She argued that such punitive measures are reminiscent of non-democratic eras and that true patriotism is demonstrated through service rather than mandatory rituals.
Separately, political friction continues regarding energy legislation. The PACE parliamentary group has accused AUR of hypocrisy, claiming the party voted in favor of a law involving OMV Petrom and natural gas reserves, which PACE alleges constitutes a massive financial gift to the company. AUR has denied these claims, asserting they voted against the legislation and that the accusations are based on misinformation.
