Romania Opens First Social Veterinary Hospital in Tărtășești
The first social veterinary hospital in Romania was inaugurated today in the commune of Tărtășești, Dâmbovița County. The centre, built by the non‑profit Asociația Sache and funded by more than 10,000 donors and corporate sponsors, aims to provide free or low‑cost veterinary care to stray animals and pets of low‑income owners.
The 1,300‑square‑metre facility includes separate consultation rooms for dogs and cats, a laboratory, radiology, an operating theatre and two inpatient units. It plans to treat over 5,000 animals each year, perform about 15,000 free sterilizations, and reinvest over 90 % of any profit back into the service. Volunteer staff care for patients, and a rescued cat named Rex, famous for surviving a metro tunnel incident, serves as the hospital’s mascot.
