Romania: Pensioners to receive state aid and local food vouchers
Romanian pensioners are set to receive various forms of financial support and social vouchers. Under Emergency Ordinance no. 23/2026, pensioners with monthly incomes up to 3,000 lei will receive a second installment of state aid in December 2026. The amount depends on income levels: 500 lei for those earning up to 1,500 lei, 400 lei for those earning between 1,501 and 2,000 lei, and 300 lei for those earning between 2,001 and 3,000 lei. This aid is distributed automatically by pension houses.
Local initiatives are also providing assistance. In Suceava County, approximately 36,000 minimum-pension beneficiaries will receive 250 lei vouchers for Christmas food purchases. Additionally, in the municipality of Roman, the Social Assistance Directorate is accepting applications for social vouchers intended for basic food and medicine through November 6, 2026.
Separately, former Romanian President Traian Băsescu commented on his own pension, noting that his monthly income has risen to 11,000 lei from 2,950 lei in 2014. He attributed a significant portion of this increase to new pension legislation and successive indexations.
