Nicușor Dan to hold new consultations after Mureșan government failure

Following the rejection of Siegfried Mureșan's proposed government by the Romanian Parliament, President Nicușor Dan has announced a new round of consultations with political parties scheduled for Monday, October 5, 2026. The Mureșan cabinet failed to secure the necessary 233 votes, receiving only 182 in favor and 15 against.

President Dan has ruled out early elections to prevent further economic and political instability, emphasizing the need to maintain the country's pro-Western direction and respect financial obligations. He has also explicitly stated that he will not accept the right-wing populist AUR party as part of any new government formation.

Political discussions regarding a new prime minister candidate are intensifying. Leading names currently being considered include PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu and Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare. Other potential candidates mentioned in political circles include Luca Niculescu and Eugen Tomac.

Political tensions remain high. The USR party has declared it will not join any government that includes PSD ministers and has called for early elections. Meanwhile, AUR leader George Simion has stated his party will not support a new government until Călin Georgescu is released from detention.
