Romania prepares for 2028–2034 EU budget negotiations
Negotiations are underway for the European Union's Multiannual Financial Framework for the 2028–2034 period. Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan, a co-rapporteur for the European Parliament, is playing a central role in these discussions. The Parliament has adopted an interim report seeking a more ambitious budget to address new challenges while maintaining existing policy funding.
In alignment with these broader EU discussions, the Romanian government, under the 2026-2028 program of designated Prime Minister Luca Niculescu, intends to focus European funds on large-scale investment projects. Key priority sectors include transport, energy, economic competitiveness, digitalization, health, education, and defense infrastructure. The strategy aims to avoid the fragmentation of resources into small, difficult-to-administer projects, instead prioritizing integrated investments correlated with specific national reforms and OECD objectives.
