Romania private pension payouts increase significantly
The number of Romanians receiving payouts from the Pillar 2 private pension system has seen a significant increase. According to data from the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) for the first half of 2026, net personal asset payments were made to 42,229 participants and beneficiaries, representing a 54.6% increase compared to the 27,316 beneficiaries recorded during the same period in the previous year.
Dan Armeanu, vice-president of the ASF, noted that this growth reflects the natural maturation of the private pension system as more participants reach retirement age. Demographic shifts, including the approaching retirement of large generational cohorts, are expected to continue driving this trend as the system transitions from an accumulation phase to a maturity phase.
Since January 1, 2024, the contribution rate to Pillar 2 has been 4.75% of gross income, up from 3.75%.
