Romania proposes funding U.S. military presence to prevent troop reductions

Romania has proposed to cover a portion of the costs associated with the United States military presence on its territory. This move comes as the Pentagon prepares a review of U.S. military deployments in Europe, which could potentially lead to further reductions in troop numbers. Currently, approximately 1,000 American soldiers are stationed at bases including Mihail Kogălniceanu, Deveselu, and Câmpia Turzii.

To encourage the retention of U.S. forces, the Romanian government plans to invest approximately 4 billion euros by 2040 in the development of the Mihail Kogălniceanu air base on the Black Sea coast. This investment aims to expand capacity to host more U.S. and allied personnel. Additionally, Romanian authorities intend to increase defense spending from roughly 2.5% to 5% of GDP, aligning with NATO objectives.

These efforts occur amid heightened tensions in the Black Sea region. President Nicușor Dan noted that France has been the first ally to offer assistance in strengthening Romania's defense against drones. Romania is also a significant beneficiary of the European SAFE program for defense acquisitions, following Poland.
