Romania proposes online reporting for minor traffic accidents
The Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) has introduced a legislative proposal to allow drivers to report certain traffic accidents online. Under the proposed changes, drivers involved in incidents resulting only in material damage—where no other vehicles are involved—could declare the event via the MAI digital HUB platform within 24 hours of the occurrence.
If approved, this measure aims to simplify formalities by allowing drivers to avoid visiting a police station in person for specific situations. The proposal also includes the electronic issuance of repair authorizations, which could be sent to drivers in digital format within five working days of the report. However, police may still require physical vehicle inspections if the provided information is insufficient or unclear.
Currently, for minor accidents involving only material damage, drivers can choose between completing an amicable settlement or reporting the incident to the police within 24 hours. If injuries are suspected, emergency services must be contacted immediately.
