Romania proposes stricter medical rules for driving licenses

The Romanian Ministry of Health has introduced a draft order to update the medical requirements for obtaining or renewing driving licenses. This initiative aims to transpose EU Directive 2025/2205 into national legislation to enhance road safety and reduce accidents caused by medical conditions incompatible with safe driving.

The proposed changes focus on four key areas: vision, mental health, alcohol consumption, and the use of drugs or medications. Specifically, ophthalmological evaluations will become more detailed, allowing doctors to investigate visual acuity, visual fields, night vision, and light sensitivity if initial assessments indicate potential issues. The goal is to provide more individualized evaluations rather than imposing automatic restrictions based solely on a diagnosis.
