Romania: Questions arise over government mandate after censure
Questions have been raised regarding the legal mandate and authority of the Romanian government following a motion of censure. After Parliament withdrew confidence in the government via a vote of 281 on May 5, 2026, concerns have emerged about the limits of the current administration's power.
Under the Constitution, a government that has lost parliamentary confidence is intended to perform only the necessary acts for the administration of public affairs until a new government is sworn in. Critics are questioning the extent of the current administration's ability to make long-term public policy decisions in fiscal, economic, social, military, and energy sectors while in this caretaker capacity.
