Romania economic update: Inflation warnings and shifting transport trends
Romania is experiencing several shifts in its economic and transport sectors. The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has warned that inflation is likely to exceed its previous 6.1% year-end forecast for 2026. This deterioration is attributed to rising fuel and energy costs, increasing raw material prices, and fluctuations in the leu exchange rate, alongside external factors like the Middle East conflict and severe drought.
In the transport sector, National Institute of Statistics (INS) data shows that passenger numbers for rail travel fell by 5.8% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, with approximately 15.5 million passengers traveling by train. Conversely, rail freight volume saw a 9.3% increase, reaching 9.786 million tons, driven largely by the transport of coke and petroleum refinery products.
In the banking sector, Banca Comercială Română (BCR) has launched a new digital investment consultancy service through its George platform. This initiative aims to provide large-scale, MiFID II-compliant investment advice to individual clients, supported by a network of 700 certified specialists to help bridge the gap between saving and investing.
