Romania ranks 7th in Europe for number of individual taxes
A 2024 analysis by Tax Policy Associates, as reported by Visual Capitalist, reveals significant variations in the complexity of European fiscal systems based on the number of individual taxes. Romania ranks 7th in Europe with 109 individual taxes, though it sits near the bottom of the continent regarding tax collection efficiency.
France stands out with the highest number of individual taxes at 348, more than double the amount found in Denmark, which holds the second position with 132. In France, 243 of these are classified as ‘low-yield taxes’ that generate relatively small revenues compared to major categories like employment taxes, which brought in over 800 billion euros in 2024.
At the other end of the spectrum, Estonia and Lithuania maintain the simplest systems with 34 and 35 individual taxes, respectively. The data indicates that the number of taxes serves as a measure of fiscal structure and complexity rather than a direct indicator of the total tax burden on citizens.
