Romania records EU's steepest household savings rate decline

Eurostat data for the first quarter of 2026 shows the EU household saving rate rose by 0.2 percentage points, while the euro area rate stayed unchanged. Romania experienced the sharpest drop, with its saving rate falling 5.3 percentage points, followed by Greece (‑3.7 pp) and Austria (‑2.5 pp). Hungary posted the largest gain, increasing its saving rate by 3.4 percentage points. Across the EU, the household investment rate slipped 0.1 percentage point. In Romania, gross disposable income fell 8.1% and household consumption decreased 0.5% over the same period.
