German Tourist Dies After Drowning at Romania's Mamaia Beach

A 56‑year‑old German tourist died after entering the Black Sea at the resort town of Mamaia on 14 June. He was observed in distress by other beachgoers and quickly pulled from the water by lifeguards. Emergency services were summoned via the 112 number; two ambulance crews from the Constanţa County Ambulance Service arrived and found the victim in cardiac‑respiratory arrest. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, he was declared dead at the scene.

Police have opened a negligent‑homicide investigation and the body will be taken to the forensic service for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Medical authorities noted that a sudden temperature drop in the sea water – a phenomenon known as upwelling that lowered the temperature to around 13‑15 °C – may have contributed to a thermal shock, especially for someone who had been sun‑bathing on the beach. The incident is the first recorded death on the Romanian Black Sea coast this summer.

“În cursul dimineţii am fost solicitaţi, prin serviciul 112, pentru un accident prin submersie în staţiunea Mamaia… s-a efectuat protocol de resuscitare, dar fără rezultat favorabil,” said Claudia Tatarici, spokesperson for the Constanţa County Ambulance Service.
