Romania records two child drowning deaths in Arad and Gorj counties

An 8‑year‑old boy drowned on June 8 in an abandoned pond near the village of Neudorf, Zăbrani commune, Arad County. He was with his 11‑ and 19‑year‑old brothers, all of whom were cycling and entered the water despite not knowing how to swim. Rescue teams, including fire‑fighters and divers, retrieved the child, but resuscitation was unsuccessful. Authorities warned that “ponds and lakes formed after industrial excavations can appear safe on the surface but hide great depths and unstable banks,” urging stricter supervision of children near such water bodies.

On the same day, a 2‑year‑old child died after falling into the Amaradia River behind his home in Târgu Jiu, Gorj County. The child was playing in the yard when he entered the water; emergency services arrived, attempted resuscitation, and later declared the child deceased at the scene. Police opened a culpable homicide investigation and transferred the body to the local forensic service.

Both incidents highlight the risk of unsupervised water hazards in rural Romanian areas and may prompt renewed safety measures.
