Romania rejects mandatory school uniform bill
The Romanian government has announced its opposition to a legislative proposal that would make school uniforms mandatory across the country. In an official position sent to Parliament, the cabinet warned that the bill, introduced by PSD Senator Daniel-Cătălin Zamfir and other Social Democratic representatives, could infringe upon children's individual rights and lead to discrimination.
The government noted that the proponents failed to provide studies demonstrating that mandatory uniforms would effectively reduce bullying or increase school safety. Officials emphasized that bullying and security are complex issues that cannot be solved solely through dress codes.
Additionally, the cabinet raised concerns regarding the financial implications of the proposal. While the bill suggests that local budgets or European funds could cover costs and that disadvantaged families should receive support, the government stated that the funding mechanisms remain unclear and could place undue financial burdens on local municipalities.
