Romania reports 390 pedestrian fatalities in 2025 road accidents
In 2025, 390 pedestrians died in serious road accidents in Romania, averaging more than one death per day. Additionally, 804 pedestrians were seriously injured, according to the 2025 Road Safety Bulletin published by the Romanian Police General Inspectorate.
Pedestrians accounted for 30% of all fatalities and 26% of serious injuries in major traffic accidents. The data identifies several primary causes for these incidents: irregular crossing resulted in 418 victims, failure to yield right-of-way to pedestrians caused 338 victims, and the presence of pedestrians on the roadway was associated with 191 victims.
Alexandru Ciuncan, president of the Coalition for Road Safety (CSR), emphasized the need for early road education, stricter adherence to rules by both drivers and pedestrians, and the implementation of visible, well-lit pedestrian crossings.
