Romania reports full Valea de Pești dam capacity amid nationwide flood warnings

Romania is facing contrasting hydrological conditions across different regions. In the Jiu Valley, the Valea de Pești dam has reached 100% capacity, with a total volume of approximately 5.3 million cubic meters. Despite extreme drought affecting water flows nationwide, the Jiu Water Basin Administration and Apa Serv Valea Jiului report that the dam's full reservoir provides a vital safety net for the drinking and industrial water supply of approximately 70,000 residents in areas including Uricani, Lupeni, Vulcan, Aninoasa, and Petroșani.

Simultaneously, a yellow code for floods has been issued for several river basins across the country for the period of August 27 to August 28, 2026. The warnings cover multiple river systems, including the Mureș, Târnava Mare, Târnava Mică, Olt, Argeș, Ialomița, Prahova, Buzău, Bistrița, and Trotuș basins. Authorities warn of potential rapid torrents, flash floods on small rivers, and rising water levels that may exceed attention thresholds in various counties.
