Romania reports high road mortality and low tax revenue relative to GDP
New data from the European Commission and Eurostat highlight significant socio-economic challenges for Romania within the European Union.
In terms of road safety, Romania remains among the EU countries with the highest road mortality rates. In 2025, the country recorded 68 deaths per million inhabitants. Only Bulgaria reported a higher rate at 71 per million, while Croatia followed with 65. This stands in stark contrast to safer nations such as Sweden and Denmark, which recorded 19 and 24 deaths per million, respectively.
Economically, Romania also ranks near the bottom of the EU regarding tax revenue. In 2025, tax revenues and social contributions accounted for only 29.3% of Romania's GDP, compared to the EU average of 40.7%. This places Romania second to last in the Union, surpassed only by Ireland at 22.7%. In contrast, France reported the highest ratio at 46% of GDP.
