Romania reports rise in phone fraud and large counterfeit goods seizures

The National Cybersecurity Directorate (DNSC) reported that 42% of cyber incidents recorded in Romania during the first half of 2026 involved telephone‑based scams (vishing), followed by phishing (14%) and SMS‑based scams (smishing, 13%). In total, about 15,000 criminal cases were opened, with roughly 72,000 investigations still pending at the end of June.

The General Inspectorate of the Border Police noted a 28% increase in intellectual‑property infringements over the same period. Police seized 231 offenses, confiscating more than 128,000 clothing items, 6,000 pairs of shoes, 64,000 cosmetics and perfumes, 2,500 leather goods, 2,700 phone‑case accessories and 6,700 toys. The seized goods were valued at over 3 million Romanian lei, with multiple large‑scale operations conducted on the DN5 corridor.
